The aim of this study is to examine what the optimum surface condition for boiling heat transfer of the plate type evaporator for OTEC. In this study, the measurement of heat transfer coefficient using three different surface plates was performed. The first surface type is flat surface (S1), the second one is vertical grooved surface (S2) and the third one is horizontal grooved surface (S3). The result shows that, the boiling heat transfer coefficient of both grooved surface was larger than that of flat surface. Especially the effect of heat transfer enhancement using grooved surface appeared notably in the nucleate boiling region.
