An adsorption gel was prepd. from waste paper by immobilizing iminodiacetic acid to examine its adsorption behavior for metal ions from a chloride media. This gel was selective for Au3+ and Pd2+ over Pt4+ and other base metal ions, including Cu2+, Fe3+, Ni2+, and Zn2+ at varying concns. of HCl. Moreover, Au3+ was reduced by the gel, generating clearly recognizable, beautiful elemental Au particles confirmed by the x-ray diffraction spectrum and SEM images of the sorbent after adsorption. This result increased the prospect for mutual sepn. of Au3+ and Pd2+ from co-existing Pt4+ and base metals.
