概要:
The knee joint is the prime anatomical structure in the lower extremity of the body and has a major effect on the quality of life and daily activities of the elderly people. Osteoarthritis (OA) of the knee is a idespread disease caused by the articular cartilage damage, and its prevalence has become a severe public health problem worldwide, especially in the ageing society. Proper identification of cartilage damage in the knee joint is an important factor in reducing the impact of OA problems. In the present research, the 3-dimensional (3D) acoustic emission (AE) source location technique has been applied for the identification of the damage location in the osteoarthritic knee joint. The results of the present research are verified through clinical investigations by an orthopedic surgeon applying the X-ray, MRI, CT techniques as well as Arthroscopic findings. The proposed 3D source location of AE technique has been calibrated in laboratory investigations using simulated AE sources on a steel cube. According to the successful validations, the technique is applied to the knee joint of two OA patients by considering both cortical and cancellous bone velocities independently for damage source localization in their knees. The source location results along with the clinical validations demonstrate that the 3D source location of AE technique can be considered as a promising tool in damage detection of OA knee.
